Welcome to Medusa

Medusa is the name of Union's brand new event space, which will provide a framework for performances, talks, workshops, intimate events, film screenings and movement.

Grind, grind. Paint, paint.

We have renovated an old worn-out classroom that had been used as an office for many years. After lots of hard work and love, it is now ready to form the setting for musical meetings and magical experiences on the culture floor in Union.

From verbs and numbers to yoga and insight

Union was one of Nørrebro's oldest schools, and the building has a long history as an institution in the district. It has been important for us to preserve that history during the renovation.

For example, we found a wooden floor full of history under the worn linoleum. Instead of covering it with a new coating, the craftsmen have gently sanded and treated the floor, so that it now has a fantastic glow and warmth. You can clearly see where the teacher's desk stood when Latin, physics and German were on the syllabus.

The walls have been painted in calm, elegant colours, and we have installed a projector and screen for meetings and film screenings, as well as a sound system for dance and movement.

The large east-facing glass sections have of course been preserved, and ensure pleasant natural light in the room.

Feminist snake hair and global jellyfish

Cultural coordinator Gustavo López named the room. All event rooms in Union have Greek and Latin names and Gustavo thought we should take the opportunity to pay tribute to Medusa from Greek mythology.

Throughout the story she is portrayed as a vicious monster, but the story of Medusa is much more heartbreaking: She was raped by Poseidon, and then punished by being transformed into a monster with snake hair. She ended her life before the sword of Perseus when he beheaded her, and it is the woman who suffered this terribly unjust and sad fate that we will pay tribute to.

And then Medusa is also another name for the jellyfish that drift around in the world's oceans.

We like that idea too.

The entire first floor of Union is now dedicated to culture and experiences. Medusa can be rented alone for smaller and intimate experiences and meetings, and for larger cultural events or seminars, it can be advantageously combined with the sister venue Dynamo and the event hall Aula.
