Jazz with global roots
When the Copenhagen Jazz Festival takes over the city this summer, Union is once again ready with a strong and curious program. Here we move far beyond classic jazz and invite the audience on a musical journey where traditions, rhythms and stories from all over the world meet.
This year we offer four concerts, each exploring the interfaces of jazz – from East Asian sound universes to South American rhythms and strong personal stories. And we end with a fifth musical experience, where local musicians are invited to test their demos in front of an audience on a warm summer evening.
Five concerts – five worlds
6 July: Wooli Duo
The festival program kicks off with Wooli Duo, opening the door to a sensual and experimental soundscape. The duo combines East Asian folk music with free improvisation, creating a vibrant, changing musical expression where tradition is reinterpreted in the present.
7 July: Novo Cais: Em Nome de Gisberta
Novo Cais will then follow with the concert “Em Nome de Gisberta” – a strong and poetic work that, through music and storytelling, celebrates life and gives voice to stories that deserve to be heard.
8 july: Candombe DK: Memory in Rhythm
Candombe DK invites the audience into a pulsating rhythmic universe with “Memory in Rhythm.” Here, Afro-Uruguayan traditions merge with modern expressions in a concert where the body can hardly sit still.
9 July: Candura
Candura brings warmth, energy and presence to the stage. With roots in Latin American music traditions combined with Italian disco rhythms, they deliver a concert experience where community and the joy of playing are at the center.
10 July: SPOILR x UNION
We move the music out into the summer air and invite you to a lively and informal end to the festival program at Union – with DJ sets, listening sessions and space for new voices.
A different jazz experience in Nørrebro
At Union, Copenhagen Jazz Festival is not about reproducing the familiar – but about exploring, challenging and expanding what jazz can be. The audience can expect concerts that draw threads across continents and traditions and open up new perspectives on the genre.
Whether you are a jazz enthusiast or just curious about new musical experiences, there is good reason to stop by Union during this year's festival. Five concerts await you, each of which provides a unique insight into jazz's global roots – and its future.
Union forms the setting for the concerts in Nørrebro and also invites you to linger before or after the concert, where the café offers food experiences inspired by the cuisines of the world.
