Día de la Memoria: remembrance and music at UNION
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the military coup in Argentina on March 24, 1976 – the beginning of a dictatorship that lasted until 1983. During this period, thousands of people were persecuted, imprisoned, killed, or forced into exile. Many were abducted and disappeared, and the children of political prisoners were taken from their families and given new identities. To this day, human rights organizations continue the search for the disappeared and work to bring justice.
The dictatorship in Argentina was not an isolated event. Across South America, several military regimes coordinated a campaign of political persecution and state terror known as Operation Condor. The campaign unfolded in a context of international involvement and had profound consequences for democracy and social life across the region.
On the 50th anniversary of the coup, Argentinians living in Denmark will gather to remember the victims and reflect on the importance of historical memory. The event begins with a gathering at Sankt Hans Torv followed by a march to UNION on Nørrebro. Upon arrival, there will be welcoming remarks and the opportunity to experience the installation Operation Condor: Declassified, which sheds light on this historical period.
The evening concludes with live music by Latin American composers and performers presenting repertoire connected to this moment in history. During the event, donations will also be collected for Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, an organization that continues to search for the children who were abducted during the dictatorship and whose identities were stolen.
