Candombe Day
Enjoy a day of reflection and commemoration of the profound cultural and social legacy of the ancestral rhythm of Candombe. More than a celebration, we propose a space to honor the generations that have preserved this legacy, exploring its roots and its evolution to the present day.
Candombe is a South American cultural manifestation, originally from Montevideo, Uruguay, related primarily to drumming. It has a significant role in the culture of the Río de la Plata in the last two hundred years, being recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Program
Talk: The rythm of resistance
An introductory talk to explore the origins of Candombe, its arrival through the African diaspora, and its transformation into a cultural symbol in Uruguay. We will review its roots, historical contexts, and the struggles of the Afro-descendant communities that kept it alive.
Cuero
The local innovative band Cuero will perform a fusion of Candombe with contemporary genres such as jazz, funk, rock, and urban music. This segment aims to show how Candombe has influenced other musical trends and how it continues to evolve and generate artistic dialogues. An opportunity to enjoy a variety of Latin jazz little known in the Old Continent.
Parade and Demonstration by Candombe DK
To close the day, the "Candombe DK" Group will offer a demonstration of their art, where drums will fill the space with the vibrant energy of this unique expression. It will be a moment to remember through body and rhythm, the importance of continuing to preserve this collective memory.
