The Friendly City Seminar
Welcome to the Friendly City!
Join Emergency Architecture for a day of lectures and hands-on exploration of urban life, hostile design and homelessness in Copenhagen.
The day begins with The Mobile City, a lecture by Malene Rudolf Lindberg, Assistant Professor at Roskilde University, exploring how mobility, urban planning and everyday practices shape our experience of the city.
In the afternoon, Emergency Architecture will introduce hostile design and lead a playful, hands-on design workshop exploring how public spaces can exclude certain people, and how we might create spaces that are more welcoming, inclusive and open to everyone.
Working in groups, participants will investigate concrete examples of hostile design at specific locations in Copenhagen. Through modelmaking and creative design exercises, we will experiment with alternative ways of shaping these spaces, exploring what friendly design could look like in practice. The workshop concludes with group presentations and a shared reflection on what makes a city welcoming.
The seminar is a collaboration between Nordic Urban Planning Studies (NUPS) at Roskilde University and Emergency Architecture, building on NUPS' theme of Livable Cities.

About Emergency Architecture
Emergency Architecture (EA) is a non-profit organisation working to strengthen the representation of disadvantaged groups through architecture, anthropology, urban planning and activism. Through participatory design and hands-on projects, EA explores how the built environment can better respond to the needs and experiences of people who are often overlooked in urban planning and design.
The workshop draws on EA's project Wonderful Copenhack, which critically examines hostile design in urban spaces and explores alternative design possibilities.
