CSFF | Talk: Animation As Documentary Language

Drawing from her work as an animation director and filmmaker, Martina Scarpelli reflects on animation as a documentary language through the case study of her film EGG, her first professional short film, TRINE ON FIRE, by Alexander Lind, where she served as animation director, and the feature documentary, I AM EVERY WOMAN, currently in development.

Moving between personal storytelling, hybrid cinema, and documentary practice, the masterclass explores the relationship between truth and fiction, and how animation can expand the ways we represent reality on screen. The session will include behind-the-scenes material, reflections on live-action and animation workflows, insights into creative collaborations across disciplines drawn from personal experience.

Bio

Martina Scarpelli is an award-winning Italian director, animator, producer, and creative director based in Denmark. With a background in Fine Art and animation, she works across films, audiovisual experiences and cultural productions. 

Her work has received more than 50 international awards, and her short film EGG was shortlisted for the 2020 César Awards and was nominated for best short film at the European Animation Awards. 

Martina is the co-founder of the Viborg-based PLASTIC Collective and creative director for audiovisual productions at Museum Wibergis.In partnership with: Filmværksted Viborg
