The Human Library Reading Garden

Come and borrow a human book in the Human Library's Reading Garden in Union.

Every Sunday, you can let your prejudices be challenged by one of our many volunteer open books for free.

The concept is simple: You show up at the library desk, where you receive guidance from our librarians about the subjects that we have available for lending. When you have chosen which human book you want to talk to, you can sit down in the Reading Garden and have an open conversation, where all questions about the subject are welcome.

The reading session can have a duration of up to 30 minutes, but you are welcome to hand in your book before that. As long as it is in the same condition as before.

Thanks to the Nordea Foundation for financial support for the Human Library's Reading Garden.

About the Human Library

In the truest sense of the word, the Human Library is a library of people. Instead of books, people are loaned out for personal conversations.

The starting point for the concept is that we all benefit from having our prejudices and what we think we know about others challenged. Therefore, the library creates a safe environment for conversations, where challenging topics can be discussed openly and without judgment.

The human books have been directly or indirectly exposed to prejudice and discrimination because of their lifestyle, occupation, social status, religious beliefs, sexuality, ethnic origin or the like.

In the Human Library, we welcome all questions, and our human book volunteers engage in sharing their personal experiences and experiences.
